We are conditioned to compromise. When buying clothing in a store off a rack, the size you choose is not really "your size", and the clothing is designed for mass consumption by a designer somewhere in a corporate office. First, manufacturers try to come up with a design that has enough mass appeal to be distributed and a pattern that fits a relatively large portion of the population fairly well (but generally not very well). Then different standard sizes are produced by adding standard percentages to the garment pattern to take an item from a 'Medium' to a 'Large' or from a '10' to a '12'.

You are probably able to wear clothing in standard sizes and mass designs comfortably, but upon closer inspection you might realize that usually there are areas in which you would prefer to make adjustments if you could. Maybe your sleeves are usually a bit short, or sometimes the waist is a bit large for you. Or maybe you would prefer buttons or cuffs in a different color or style you don't see in the retail store.
